Fire and Smoke events leave complex particulate and chemical residues that can significantly affect health and often leave a lingering smoky odor. One solution is to identify and quantify specific VOCs used as surrogates, or indicators, for the number of VOCs produced during fire and smoke events. Depending on the situation, analysis can be performed in air, bulk, and surface samples. Air samples are most suited for recent fires or where VOCs inhalation is a concern. Size or models can be used to determine the persistence of odors or VOCs from materials that continue to off the gas, which is typically the cause of long-term respiratory irritation.
